THE FREECROSS STORY

Profile: Freecross Inventor Wolfgang Eisenberg

A long-time bike enthusiast, runner and fan of the indoor elliptical trainer, Wolfgang Eisenberg (47) had the flash of inspiration back in 2006 to get the elliptical trainer outdoors and onto wheels. "After a back injury, I noticed the strain that biking puts on the lower back, as well as the impact associated with running/jogging. The elliptical was a great solution because of the upright, low-impact motion and great all-around workout. I just thought it would be better outside."

Eisenberg started by doing extensive research of elliptical machines, bicycle construction and components. A banker by training and former entrepreneur in the service sector, he found himself in a brand new role: the mad inventor. "I was more or less obsessed and spent a tremendous amount of time researching the options and developing the idea - going to trade shows, sporting goods stores and talking to bike industry experts." By the spring of 2007 Eisenberg felt his concept was reasonably sound from a technical standpoint and that he was ready to apply for the patent and start showing the idea to potential investors.

But first his American friend was so impressed by the idea that he scraped together his savings to finance a first prototype. "We actually started by buying a stationary home trainer and a recumbent bike," recalls Eisenberg. "We took them apart and got to work with the help of a bike-industry expert building something completely new. Some engineers I had spoken to told me my steering concept would never work. I´m glad I´m not an engineer - I might have given up!"

The moment of truth came with the first test ride in late 2007. "I was nervous about that first test. We had invested what seemed like a ton of time and money in this prototype without knowing whether it would even work. But within minutes, my business partner, an avid skier, was racing down a hill making tight slalom turns whooping with delight. His 6 year old son got on and was riding and steering easily within minutes. That was when we knew we had something good."

Eisenberg and his partner Björn Schuman took some video footage of different people riding the prototype and set it to music. The simple demo-film worked wonders and got them in the door with industry leaders, many of whom have contributed to Freecross´ further development: Bertrandt engineering, German Sports University Cologne, Designgestalten/ASW Engineering, leading bike industry manufacturers in Germany and Taiwan, and Norbert Britz, experienced businessman, investor and third member of today´s Freecross team.

"It has been an amazing process," says Eisenberg. "The months of research, the countless discussions and drafts, the many rounds of prototyping, and the collaboration among experts across continents. The market-ready product represents so much know-how and experience. I really am proud to present this to our first customers."
